My First Computer

“Do you need a computer,” my mother asked.
“No,” I replied over the phone.
“Why not? You can use it to do your papers for school.”
I was attending Morris Brown College and was more worried about being a bachelor than a student.“ Because it takes up too much space in my apartment,” I replied. “If I have a paper, I can go to the school and use one of their computers.”
“What are you going to put in replace of it,” she asked.
“Nothing.”
My mother was stunned. She couldn’t understand why I would turn down such an asset. We hung up the phone, and I went about my day, thinking nothing more of it. I did as I said. I went to the school and did my papers whenever needed. I had no idea how insanely dumb that sounded at the moment, but at the time, I thought it was a great decision not to clutter my space.
Within the next month, my parents came down to visit. They had a key to my place, so I didn’t have to be around to let them in and out, allowing me to go about my day, mostly working out with my school’s basketball team.
On this day, when I walked in, I saw my mother and father putting something together in the corner of my living room. I was confused about what they were doing, but it quickly came to me.
“What? What are you doing?!”
My mother lifted up, “Hey! We got you a computer.”
“I can see that! But why?”
“Well, we figured you could do your work on it.”
“Awww, man! Y’all just wasted your money! You could've given that money to me. I’m never going to use it.”
I had no idea the person that I was about to turn into.
